I’ve lived in Raumati for 8 years. Our house is near the airport. A couple of years ago I became interested in planes after downloading a plane radar app on my phone. I could see which planes were flying around in the area. After that, I decided to go out with my little automatic camera and take a few photos of the little ones coming in to land. It was lots of fun. I have since saved up and purchased my first DSLR camera. I love going to the airport to take photos of planes. There is always lots of action. I’ve met lots of new people and made new friends at the airport. I am a member of the aero club and have had a few training flights with them. I’ve also been lucky to have been offered flights up to Hawera for a fly in earlier this year and up to Taumarunui with a couple other aircraft based at Kapiti.
From my house you can hear the aircraft both landing and departing. I’m so lucky that I can just hop on my bike and be at the end of the runway in minutes to photograph and watch planes. I’ve had pictures published in magazines and have sold some of my many images that I’ve captured at Kapiti Coast Airport.
January 2020 I was able to go on one of the DC-3 scenic flights out of Kapiti. It was a great flight and experience.
I have a instagram account where I post many of my photographs I’ve captured at Kapiti Coast Airport.
I’ve got one thousand followers.
I’m always out at the airport chatting with pilots, ground crew and other plane enthusiasts. I would be very sad if the airport shut down.
